Why Experience Matters: Choosing a Newborn Photographer You Can Trust With Your Baby

Your baby's first portraits are precious — and the person holding your newborn during the session matters just as much as the final images. Newborn photography is a specialized art, and not every photographer with a camera is qualified to safely pose a days-old baby.

Here's what every parent should know before booking.

Newborn Photography Is Not Like Other Photography

Photographing a newborn is nothing like photographing a wedding, a family, or even an older baby. Newborns are fragile. Their airways are tiny, their circulation is delicate, their temperature regulation is immature, and their little bodies cannot tell you when something feels wrong.

Safe newborn posing requires specific knowledge: how to support the head and neck at all times, how to keep airways open in every pose, how to recognize when a baby needs a break, and — just as importantly — which popular poses should never be attempted without composite editing (combining multiple images in post-production so the baby is always fully supported).

A photographer without this training may not even realize when a pose is unsafe.

Safety Training Is Non-Negotiable

This is why I have invested in multiple newborn safety and handling workshops throughout my career. These aren't one-time courses — newborn safety education is ongoing, because techniques, best practices, and our understanding of infant physiology continue to evolve.

In these workshops, photographers train hands-on in:

  • Safe wrapping and swaddling techniques that support healthy hip development

  • Posing newborns while protecting the airway and circulation

  • Reading a baby's cues — knowing when to pause, feed, soothe, or stop

  • Studio safety: proper heating, sanitization, and prop stability

  • Which composite techniques keep babies safe while creating those dreamy, gravity-defying images

When you hand your baby to a photographer, you deserve to know they have done this training — not once, but as a continuing commitment.

Experience You Can Feel

I have spent over 10 years specializing in newborn photography. In that time, I have photographed hundreds of newborns — sleepy ones, wide-awake ones, fussy ones, tiny preemies, and big chunky babies who had opinions from day one.

That experience matters in ways you will feel during your session:

  • A calm, unhurried session. Experienced newborn photographers don't rush. Your session is built around your baby's needs — feeding, soothing, and settling come first, always.

  • Soothing expertise. After a decade of newborn sessions, I can settle most babies quickly and recognize what they need — warmth, a feeding break, a position change.

  • Efficiency without pressure. I know how to work within a newborn's rhythms, capturing a full gallery in the windows when your baby is most content.

  • Problem-solving in the moment. Every baby is different. Experience means I've seen it all and can adapt gracefully — no stress transferred to you.

As a Portrait Masters Master Level accredited photographer, I hold myself to the highest standards of both artistry and professionalism.

You Should Feel Comfortable and Confident

Here's the most important part: you should feel completely comfortable and confident in who you hand your baby to.

Trust your instincts. During your consultation or first conversation, notice how the photographer talks about safety. Do they welcome your questions? Do they explain how they handle your baby? Do they seem genuinely experienced with newborns — or is newborn photography just one of many things they offer?

Questions worth asking any newborn photographer:

How many years have you specialized in newborn photography?

What newborn safety and handling training have you completed?

How do you keep my baby safe during posing?

What happens if my baby is fussy or won't sleep?

Can I stay close and watch during the session? (The answer should always be yes.)

A qualified, experienced newborn photographer will welcome every one of these questions.

Your Baby Deserves Nothing Less

These first portraits become family heirlooms — but the experience of creating them should be just as beautiful as the images. You deserve a session that feels calm, safe, and joyful, led by someone whose experience lets you simply relax and enjoy watching your baby be celebrated.

If you're expecting in the Tampa area, I'd love to talk with you about your newborn session.
